Why Is Genesis 6:1-4 NOT Referring To The Sons of Seth?

Any human interpretation of the sons of God in Genesis 6 that ignores the original context for those verses – and that context is Mesopotamian religion, (specifically, the Apkallu story), is by definition out of context. If you have a commentary that is taking some other view that doesn’t interact with the Apkallu material, it is obsolete, by virtue of the research that’s been done more recently. Check it out!

the Hebrew phrases bene ha’elohim in Genesis 6:2, 4 and Job 1:6; 2:1, bene ’elohim in Job 38:7 and Deuteronomy  32:8 (4QDeut and LXX), and bene ’elim in Psalms 29:1; 89:7 as “slightly varying phrases” that all have the same meaning, while bene ‘elyon in Psalm 82:6 is simply a close variant.

Hebrew scholars understood that the Sons of God from Genesis 6, or Bene Ha Elohim in the original Hebrew, were angels – not men, as per the prevailing “Sons of Seth” taught in Rockefeller funded seminaries today.

Since about the fifth century, this view has been lost to western Christiandom thanks to Augustine popularizing the Sons of Seth theory. In short, the Sethite view is that the Sons of God were men from the righteous lineage of Seth who began intermarrying with women from the corrupt, wicked line of Cain.

Frankly, this defies logic in several ways:

1. How likely is it that all the Sons of Seth were good, while all the Daughters of Cain were evil?

2. Did the Sons of Cain never marry the Daughters of Seth?

3. Why would these union produce Nephilim giants

4. Why would these unions lead to wickedness so massive that God wiped out the world with a flood?

5. Every other use of Bene Ha Elohim in the Hebrew Scriptures refers to angels.

Proponents of the modern Sethite view generally point to Yeshuah’s (Jesus) teaching on the resurrection:

“For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.” ~Matthew 22:30.

The key words here are “in the resurrection” and “in heaven.” Noah’s neighbors were in the flesh, not yet resurrected – and the angels who “came in to the daughters of man” were most definitely not in heaven.

There are many examples in the Bible of angels interacting with humans in physical ways – eating, drinking, wrestling, and even that issue in front of the house of Lot. Why can’t they also procreate? The same people often have no problem with the flawed Cain Seedline Theory where a fallen angel seduces eve. The true Seed of the Serpent from Genesis 3:15 is the Nephilim created from Genesis 6.

Also, notably – Both Jude and Peter refer to the only example in the Scriptures where angels transgressed:

For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;”

~2 Peter 2:4

And

And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

~Jude 6-7
