9 Prehistoric Civilizations That All Tried to Kill the Same Watchers

The Popol Vuh does not describe the lords of Xibalba as demons. It describes them by name, by office, and by the specific methods the earliest humans used to try to kill them, and it records that the first attempt failed. The text is preserved in a single colonial-era manuscript transcribed by the Dominican friar Francisco Ximenez around seventeen oh one from an earlier written and oral tradition. Allen Christenson’s two thousand three translation, published by Brigham Young University Press, renders the relevant passages without ambiguity. The lords of Xibalba are named, seated, and powerful before the first humans exist. They are still seated when the heroes arrive to kill them. Not underworld gods in the theological sense. Beings who predate human civilization and who survived the coordinated effort to remove them. That distinction matters.
